Minnesota Nets Second-Most Academic All-Americans in School History

MINNEAPOLIS – With 11 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America honors during the 2021-21 academic year, the University of Minnesota has tied for its second-most such honors in school history.
Representing Minnesota this year in earning recognition for their athletic and academic achievements were Blaise Andries (Football), Alec Basten (track & field and cross country), Natalie DenHartog (softball) Lindsay Eliasen (rowing), Jack Gibbens (football), Bethan Hasz (track & field and cross country), Abby Kohut-Jackson (track & field and cross country), Val Larson (track & field and cross country), Ona Loper (gymnastics), Lexy Ramler (gymnastics) and Kaleb Siekmeier (track & field and cross country).
Among the sports that are sponsored by Minnesota, the Golden Gophers led the Big Ten in both Academic All-Americans and Academic All-District honorees (25). The Gophers finished second nationally in CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in their sponsored sports this year behind only Stanford (19), while the All-District recipients tied with Harvard for fourth behind Stanford (32), Cal (31) and Boise State (26).
Minnesota also had 11 Academic All-America selections in the 2015-16 school year, and they are coming off a school record 15 honorees a year ago.
Within the Big Ten, Minnesota outpaced Michigan, which was second in both All-District picks (22) and All-Americans (10), while Penn State was third with 13 and eight, respectively.
Additionally, Maroon & Gold student-athletes earned a total of 331 Academic All-Big Ten accolades for the 2021-22 academic year. In the fall, 130 student-athletes were recognized, while the winter saw 102 earn Big Ten accolades and another 99 received such honors in the spring.
The NCAA also released its Academic Progress Rate (APR) earlier this month. Seven Gopher programs earned a perfect 1,000 multiyear rate, which collects data from four academic years, while 14 programs earned a perfect APR score in the most recent reporting year, 2020-21.
In tandem with the hard work of student-athletes, the athletic department's national achievements have benefited from continued investment in academics including the Athletes Village and the Lindahl Academic Center, where all University of Minnesota student-athletes are provided with academic support and development opportunities as they work towards their degrees.
Started by CoSIDA in 1952, the Academic All-America program has honored 155 University of Minnesota student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average at their institution. Nominees are selected by CoSIDA members based on their academic and athletic achievements.
