Morgan Named a Semifinalist for Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award

11/16/2022 12:00:00 PM | Football

Gopher quarterback is a leader on and off the field and has a career record of 33-14

University of Minnesota quarterback Tanner Morgan was named a semifinalist for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year today. Morgan is one of 20 semifinalists for the award and is a semifinalist for the second straight year.

The award, now in its sixth year, is the first college football honor to focus primarily on a player's leadership, both on and off the field.

The winningest quarterback in Minnesota history, Morgan has led a revival of Gopher football while experiencing both joy and heartbreak during his collegiate career. Through it all he has exemplified class and dignity.

Morgan, who is 33-14 as a starting quarterback, lost his father, Ted, in July 2021 to Glioblastoma, which is a form of brain cancer. Morgan, who is a man of deep faith, announced the death of his father in an emotional Instagram post. A little more than a year later, Morgan married his wife, Sarah, in a ceremony in Virginia.

Morgan, who has earned two degrees at Minnesota, has led Bible studies in college and is always present at community services events, like the team's annual Turkey Drive, Hope Kids events, kid's camps or hospital visits.

Morgan represented Minnesota twice at Big Ten football media days and spoke to the media during the week of every game he played in and spoke with the media after every game – win or loss. He is a member of the team's Leadership Council and is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.

Morgan will be remembered as one of the best quarterbacks in school history, but his legacy will be how he conducted himself and treated people off the field.
