Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Athletic Bands?

The Athletic Bands are ensembles that perform at athletic events for the University of Minnesota - Duluth. This includes the Marching Band that performs at UMD Football games, and the Pep Band that performs at UMD Volleyball, Men & Women's Basketball, and Men & Women's Hockey games. The Athletic Bands also perform at parades, masterclasses, and community events not only in Duluth, but all across the Northland, and are always open to invitations for new events and experiences.

Do I need marching or musical experience to join?

Not at all! You could have been playing your instrument since 5th grade, or just picked it up a week ago! We accept anyone and everyone into Athletic Bands, regardless of past experience.

Do I have to be a Music Major to join the Athletic Bands?

No! As a matter of fact, a majority of our ensembles are non music majors. We have members representing every college within UMD.

Are the Athletic Bands credited classes?

The Athletic Bands are a student-run Campus Life Program, and does not count towards your semesters academic credit load.

Do I have time to participate in the Athletic Bands?

Well, Like the rest of your college experience, that's going to be up to you. Students involved in Athletic Bands are often very successful, both academically and socially.

The band is made up of almost as many different majors as there are personnel, which means that not only can that trombone player have lunch with you, but she can also help you with your chemistry homework. The guy playing quads is really good at editing papers. And every single person in the band was once a freshman too. They can help you learn time management skills, find help with your classes, and talk you through those roommate fights. Remember: when you’re a member of the band, you’re a member of a family. If you need help, just ask!

Do I need my own instrument to join Athletic Bands?

If you do not own your own instrument, or play a large instrument (looking at you sousaphones), Athletic Bands does have access to instruments that are available for members to rent. If you are in need of an instrument for the upcoming school year, more information on the process of renting an instrument will become available during the summer, before the beginning of the school year.
