INTRODUCTION

My name is Emily Iverson, and this is my final semester at the University of Minnesota Duluth, majoring in Public Health. Over the last few years, my major health interests have evolved into health promotion, health communication, and health equity. This semester, I had the wonderful opportunity to fill the role of Member Experience and Communication Intern with the Duluth Area YMCA and got to improve my health communication skills. Additionally, I got to grow my knowledge and skills surrounding member experience. After graduation, I am planning to stay in Duluth as I enter into the workforce.

Abstract

For my internship, I worked on a few projects for the Duluth Area YMCA. These projects included redesigning the Kids Club Manual, brainstorming member appreciation ideas, and developing social media ideas to promote the YMCA and the happenings within it. Additionally, I spent a good amount of time at the member services desk, ensuring that members have a positive experience and feel welcomed! One project that I worked on consisted of asking members why they love the YMCA and what their favorite parts of the YMCA were. The projects that I completed throughout the course of the semester truly allowed me to expand upon a wide array of professional skills, and I am so grateful that I got the opportunity to intern at such a wonderful organization with such wonderful people!

  1. Compile an ongoing list of social media and member appreciation ideas.
  2. Redesign the new, revised version of the Kids Club Manual.

Reflection

Interning with the Duluth Area YMCA this semester has provided me with an incredible experience to grow and develop my professional skills. I am so thankful for this experience and the growth that it has prompted. I can't think of another place where I would have rather completed this internship. I was surrounded by supportive and kind-hearted people both among the staff as well as the members. I can only hope that I can work among such wonderful people again in my future career.
