Tired of politics? Take it back.

The Minnesota Civic Studies Initiative and the College of Education and Human Development, University of Minnesota, present the second annual Minnesota Symposium on Civic Renewal.

Saturday, October 27, 2018
11:30 AM to 7 PM
The Graduate Hotel, Minneapolis
$20 – includes lunch and reception!

Americans of diverse backgrounds and perspectives agree that our public life is dysfunctional. In one way or another citizens feel displaced from the center of self-government, reduced to mere consumers accepting or rejecting prefabricated solutions to their problems or enhancements to their lifestyles. The result is polarization, with policy questions presented as zero-sum contests to constituents lacking opportunities to engage civilly across differences.

The Minnesota Symposium on Civic Renewal showcases the ways that Minnesotans can and do work together, across differences, to reassert their ownership of public life and their responsibilities to improve it. This year’s symposium is more briskly paced, more interactive, and more driven by you, the civic agent. Our new “panelview” format features group interviews and audience Q&A with Minnesotans experienced in cooperating across ideological, cultural, and institutional barriers – and opens with St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter and Burnsville Mayor Elizabeth Kautz!

Join us – and a few hundred of your fellow Minnesotans – to explore and imagine how we can reclaim democracy as the work of citizens.

The Minnesota Civic Studies Initiative (MNCSI) convenes an ideologically, culturally, and professionally diverse group of citizens to build empathy, create trust, and formulate concrete plans for advancing the public good. MNCSI is grateful to Dean Jean K. Quam of the University of Minnesota College of Education and Human Development for hosting the group, and to the Spencer Foundation for a generous grant to support this symposium. Thanks also to our local sponsor Minnesota State, additional sponsor No Labels Minnesota, and to the Coalition of Asian American Leaders and the University of Minnesota Citizen Student Movement for extra support.
