National Library of Medicine • An induced abortion is a procedure to end a pregnancy. It can be done two different ways: Medication abortion (also called medical abortion) and Procedural abortion. An induced abortion is different from a spontaneous abortion. That is the loss of a pregnancy before the 20th week of pregnancy. It is more commonly known as a miscarriage.

In September 2021, Mexico’s Supreme Court ruled that it is unconstitutional to punish abortion as a crime. Melissa Ayala, litigation coordinator for the Mexican reproductive justice organization GIRE, and Dr. Camilla Reuterswärd, Research Fellow at the Institute for Development Studies at the University of Sussex and an expert on the politics of abortion in Mexico, joined the Center on Women, Gender, and Public Policy for a conversation about the Supreme Court decision, the likelihood of state-level backlash, and the broader implications for abortion rights in Latin America.
