Position Purpose

The Pharmacy Intern performs a combination of clinical and distributive pharmacy services, under the supervision of a pharmacist, necessary for the provision of pharmaceutical care to each customer. The intern is allowed to participate in any practice activity of a pharmacist, provided that such activity is under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. As the intern progresses, and demonstrates an increase in ability, the preceptor will grant increased latitude. Responsible for their shift workload within the limitations of their internship training. May respond to emergency situations with a licensed pharmacist for educational purposes. Other duties as assigned.

Accountabilities:

 Assisting the pharmacist in the verification of new medication orders, handling drug information questions, and performing other activities as required in accordance with state intern rules and regulations

 All functions that pharmacy technicians are authorized to perform

 Customer medication reconciliation and counseling

 May respond to emergency situations (Code Blue, Rapid Response Teams) with a licensed pharmacist for educational purposes.

 Accepts other duties as assigned to promote the accomplishment of organizational goals.

 The team member is accountable to demonstrate proficiency for the skills outlined in the appropriate position skills list.

The Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) has served the community for more than a century. It is the most advanced, full-service referral care center for large and small animals in Minnesota. The VMC sees more than 50,000 cases annually, with specialists available in all areas of medicine and surgery. More than 50 of the veterinarians on staff have undergone several years of additional training to become board-certified specialists in a particular area of veterinary medicine.

The VMC services are provided by attending faculty, staff, clinicians, residents, interns and 4th year veterinary students. Other patient care responsibilities are provided by certified veterinary technicians (CVT’s), who are licensed professionals trained in veterinary nursing services, veterinary technicians and veterinary technician assistants.
