PharmacoNeuroImmunology Program

PNI Training Program Information

PharmacoNeuroImmunology is a multidisciplinary field at the interface between the central nervous system and the immune system, and pharmacological effects on these systems. Funded by NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse), the University of Minnesota PharmacoNeuroImmunology (PNI) interdisciplinary training program focuses on the interactions of drugs of abuse with the nervous and immune systems, and integrates our understanding of these molecular, cellular, and physiological interactions with their behavioral counterparts, including the role of the drugs of abuse as co-morbidities in infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS. The PNI faculty also offer the opportunity to train in medication development targeting substance use disorders or other unmet needs related to drugs of abuse. The PNI Training Program provides state-of-the-art training for predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees in areas that intersect four disciplines: pharmacology, psychiatry/psychology, neuroscience, and microbiology/immunology.

The PNI Training Program has thrived for more than 40 years and has trained over 300 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Former trainees now hold influential positions in academia, government, and industry.
