Mentoring: What to Expect
Mentoring is a personal and professional development strategy through which one person facilitates the intentional development of another. The mentorship committee formalizes this process in a six month cohort in which you are matched into a mentor/mentee pair. There is something of value that can be learned from every relationship built.
- Your mentor or mentee won't necessarily have the same type of job you have (or job you want in the future)
- Mentors do not need to be older or have more experience than mentees.
- Mentor/mentee relationships can continue beyond the three month point if mutually agreeable by both parties.
A mentor is someone who is willing to listen, share their own experiences, and offer career-related advice for their mentee. The goal of this program is to help form and develop those relationships, but it is not our intent to provide training, job shadowing, or job placement with this program.
As a participant of this program, we recommend that you meet twice a month, via whatever communication style works best for you. At minimum, we ask that you commit to meeting at least twice a month to participate in this program. The Mentorship Committee will provide starting materials as well as periodic check-ins and support.
