Summer League Update: Gopher Pitchers
7/22/2020 10:19:00 AM | Baseball
Since the onset of July, members of the Gopher Baseball program have been competing in various summer baseball leagues across the nation. While many are playing for their respective town teams due to the uniqueness of this summer, there are also a handful of Gophers participating in developmental collegiate leagues, such as the Northwoods League, Sunbelt Collegiate League and Expedition League.
Altogether, 27 Gophers are expected to partake in some level of summer play. After providing an in-depth look at the performance of University of Minnesota hitters last week, we continue this week with a report on a handful of Gopher hurlers who are using the offseason to refine their craft.
Will Anderson | St. Cloud Rox | Northwoods League
Holding a 1-0 record, Anderson has made four appearances on the mound for a total of 5 2/3 innings pitched. Having allowed four earned runs, Anderson owns a 6.35 ERA, but that also comes with a 1.06 WHIP as he has given up just three hits. Anderson has also struck out four batters.
Noah DeLuga | Rockford Rivets | Northwoods League
As he awaits his first fall season in Maroon and Gold, DeLuga is already shining in the Northwoods League. Through eight innings of work (six appearances), Deluga's ERA sits at 2.25 to go with two saves and seven strikeouts.
Ryan Duffy | Fond du Lac Dock Spiders | Northwoods League
Duffy is off to a strong start this summer, pacing Gopher hurlers with 8 2/3 innings pitched over the course of five appearances. With a 2.08 ERA to his credit, the southpaw has registered seven strikeouts.
Drew Hmielewski | Marshall A's | Town Team
Although known by Gopher fans for his bat and quality glove-work in the outfield, Hmielewski has made two pitching appearances for the Marshall A's this summer. Both outings came in save situations, during which Hmielewski successfully recorded both saves via a pair of scoreless frames while striking out four.
Bubba Horton | Delano A's | Town Team
After a breakout 2020 campaign, Horton began his summer with a pair of one inning outings. Across those two frames, Horton surrendered three runs while striking out four batters, although all of the damage came in his first appearance. In his second appearance of the summer, Horton worked a perfect inning while striking out the side in order.
Jack Liffrig | Fond du Lac Dock Spiders | Northwoods League
Liffrig has been brilliant in his long-awaited return to the mound thus far. Through three appearances totaling six innings, the lefty has allowed just one run on two hits while striking out eight. That equates to a 1.50 ERA and 0.67 WHIP for Liffrig, who also sports a 2-0 record with one save on the season.
Gus Radel | Pierre Trappers | Expedition League
Having made four appearances for a total of 4 2/3 innings for the Trappers, Radel has allowed five earned runs despite giving up just three hits. With five strikeouts, Radel currently wields a healthy 9.6 K/9.
Trent Schoeberl | St. Cloud Rox | Northwoods League
Schoeberl has made four appearances for the Rox, including one start for a total of 6 1/3 innings pitched. The rising sophomore right-hander has allowed five earned runs and struck out four during that span, although he has only been tagged for one extra base hit.
Bennett Theisen | St. Paul Hops | Town Team
Pitching for the Hops, Theisen has only made one single-inning appearance so far this summer. He made the most of it, however, working a scoreless one-two-three frame with two strikeouts.
