Design & Health Collaboration Brainstorming Lunch at the Weisman

Monday, November 11 12:00 pm-1:30 pm
Join Boris Oicherman, Weisman Curator for Creative Collaboration; Medical School faculty; and Abimbola Asojo for a brainstorming session on how Design faculty can collaborate with the health sciences on grant funding for the 'Bold Ideas' initiatives. RSVP directly to Associate Dean Asojo by November 5, EOD, to be sure a lunch is ordered for you.

Smart and Connected Health PI Meeting & Aspiring PI Travel Award
January 6-7, 2020
NSF is providing funding support to aspiring PI to attend the workshop for aspiring PIs interested in in smart health research.

RADPN Resource Materials 
Thought provoking, Advice-filled, How To and How NOT To pursue research funding, this event was posted on the Research Resources website, and took place on the UMN Campus. Five presenters shared the slides from their presentations at the Research Advancement and Development Professionals Fall Conference they nicknamed "RADCON".

  • Reiko Yajima, PhD, CDes Advisory board, (bio) presented a talk on collaborations between Design and Health initiatitves, and the pursuit of funding to support research. Dr. Yajima shared her presentation slides.  
  • Boris Oicherman, the Weisman's new Curator for Creative Collaboration is hosting a Design & Health Brainstorming luncheon on Monday, November 11 12:00 pm-1:30 pm. at the Weisman. There is still time to join the discussion if you act before 5 pm on Nov 5th! 
  • CUHCC Design Charette:  A round table discussion/design ideation session for CUHCC's waiting room design invites student participation on Dec 4, 2019. Contact Abimbola if you are interested

Funding Opportunity: NSF Announces a New Long-Term Ecological Research Urban Site
Deadline December 4, 2019.  
National Science Foundation (NSF) solicitation for the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Program, a federal programs that emphasizes ecological monitoring and observations over extended periods of time, exploring research questions that short-term experiments are ill-equipped to answer.

Growing Convergence Research Program Solicitation
Deadline February 3, 2020
Growing Convergence Research (GCR) at the National Science Foundation was identified as one of 10 Big Ideas. Convergence research is a means for solving vexing research problems, in particular, complex problems focusing on societal needs. It entails integrating knowledge, methods, and expertise from different disciplines and forming novel frameworks to catalyze scientific discovery and innovation. The College of Design sponsored a grant-writing workshop tailored to this NSF Program Solicitation on September 6th. See Research Resources website to access materials from the workshop.

 Apply NOW!  for Funds to use THIS FALL semester. Funding not used by December 15 will revert to source.
The College of Design has six $500 to $1000 seed grants available to support the development of BOLD IDEAS - for collaboration between Design faculty and Health research initiatives. Deadline to apply is November 8th.


Imagine Fund First deadline November 18, 2019.
Imagine Fund grants support innovative research or scholarship in the arts, humanities, and design. Applications are now open for the annual awards (due Dec. 2), Arts, Humanities, and Design Chair position (due Jan. 6), Special Events Round 1 (due Nov. 18), and Special Events Round 2 (due March 16)
Apply for Imagine Fund awards, Special Events funding, and ADH chair position.

Healthy Foods Healthy Lives Institute Grants;
Letter-of-Interest deadline October 2;
Full proposal deadline November 20, 2019.

The Healthy Foods Healthy Lives Institute is requesting proposals for its fall 2019 grants cycle. The Community-University Partnership Grant Program fund innovative community-university partnerships related to food, nutrition, and health. The Faculty Planning Grant Program supports the development of University interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary research teams related to food, nutrition, and health.

Deadline February 6, 2020
Administered through the Office of the Vice President for Research, Grant-in-Aid Program (GIA). 

Faculty Travel Grants 
Deadlines: August, December, March
International Travel Grants are funded by the University of Minnesota central administration to support the internationalization of the University on all campuses through research, teaching, and outreach.  Graduate Students may also apply.

IAS-Faculty Residential Fellows
Each year up to twelve University of Minnesota faculty members are selected as Residential Fellows.

Center for Educational Innovation - Teaching Innovation Grant
Grants for up to $1,000 available to support innovative teaching and learning across the University.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) 
Fall applications are under review now for grants to be awarded for spring semester 2020. Watch for our spring announcement for Summer and Fall 2020 UROP Grant funding.
Be a mentor!  UROP awards fund students to do research and creative activities with faculty. Faculty, please complete this CDes UROP Projects Collection Form  so we can promote your opportunities to students. You can complete this form any time, and as many times as you have ideas to explore undergraduate research help with.

When assessing your department’s needs for short-term or ongoing volunteer tasks—from participating in research studies to providing assistance during campus events—consider taking advantage of the skills and experience available from the University Retirees Volunteer Center’s more than 450-person volunteer registry.
