Value Investing Club at the University of Minnesota (Value@UMN)

Mission: The Value Investing Club at the University of Minnesota is a student organization dedicated to connecting students who are passionate about learning and applying fundamentals-based value investing principles as practiced by influential investors including Joel Greenblatt, Seth Klarman, Howard Marks, Charlie Munger, Benjamin Graham, Warren Buffett, and many more. Value@UMN seeks to create a group of individuals who are genuinely interested in value investing and are actively engaged in networking, teaching, and learning with each other.

Please note that this club is focused specifically on the value investing strategy. You may wish to consider joining a more general UMN investment club, or ones that are dedicated to other topics

Meetings: Value investing (and this club) is for everyone—you do not have to be majoring in finance or working in asset management to practice value investing principles. However, given that value investing is only a small niche in the broader investing landscape, we expect to have a small, yet dedicated membership.

Joining Value@UMN will be a worthwhile experience if members are actively engaged in every way possible. This not only includes showing up to meetings, but also contributing to discussion, adding content to the member resource drive, researching and providing opinions for investment opportunities we evaluate as a group, voting on club decisions, and whatever other requirements as set by the group. Additionally, members will be involved in running the organization: creating membership requirements, setting meeting times, choosing which topics to pursue, etc.

As mentioned, members will be added to a Google Drive containing resources contributed by current and former members in addition to the club’s Slack channel. The primary source of value for members of Value@UMN is the ability to share ideas with other investors at meetings and social events.
