Ceph in HPC Environments at SC18

Overview

Individuals from several organizations will come together at SC18: The International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis in November, 2018 in Dallas, Texas to share their experiences with Ceph in HPC Environments.

This "Birds of a Feather (BoF)" meeting will bring together Ceph developers and systems administers to share their experience working with Ceph and to discuss how it can be used to address many of the challenges that we now associate with Big Data and data intensive research. The format for this BoF is a series of six lightning talks. Each talk is about 6 minutes, followed by questions. Researchers, developers, and administrators are welcome to come and participate in this session and to share and learn about Ceph in the wild.

Speakers and Panel Members

Ben Lynch, Minnesota Supercomputing Institute, University of Minnesota

  • Talk Title:  Introduction
  • Bio Sketch: For his Ph.D. thesis, Ben developed computational methods used for thermochemistry and thermochemical kinetics simulations. At MSI, he leads a variety of projects in software development and new technology deployment. Ben has led Ceph deployments for object and block storage at MSI.

Pablo Llopis Sanmillan, CERN

  • Talk Title: CephFS and HPC at CERN

  • Bio Sketch: Pablo is a computer engineer at CERN and service manager of the HPC service. He holds a Ph.D. in computer science from University Carlos III of Madrid. In the past he has also collaborated with Argonne National Laboratory and IBM Research Zurich on HPC and cloud-related topics. His main areas of interest include high performance computing, distributed systems, storage systems, and power efficiency.     

Douglas Fuller, Red Hat, Inc.

  • Talk Title:  What’s New in Ceph

  • Bio Sketch: Douglas Fuller has been a Ceph engineer at Red Hat, Inc. since 2015. Prior to joining Red Hat, Doug worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory Oak Ridge Leadership Computing facility, working on design and implementation of some of the world’s largest and fastest scalable data storage systems. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Iowa State University, studying programming models and languages for high performance computing.

Graham Allan, Minnesota Supercomputing Institute, University of Minnesota

  • Talk Title:  Experiences with Ceph Object Store at MSI

  • Bio Sketch: Graham is an HPC System Admininistrator at the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute. He has worked on the design and implementation of serveral HPC systems at the University of Minnesota. Graham currently maintains multiple Ceph clusters and works on design of new systems at MSI. He holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland.

Ben Meekhof, HPC Storage Admin and OSiRIS lead engineer, University of Michigan Advanced Research Computing Technology Services

  • Talk title: OSiRIS Overview and Challenges
  • Bio Sketch: Ben Meekhof works at University of Michigan Advanced Research Computing and is the lead engineer for the OSiRIS research storage platformHe has been working in HPC / Research computing for 10+ years and prior to taking on the OSiRIS project worked with ATLAS computing at the Great Lakes Tier 2 center. 

Scott Yockel, Director of Research Computing, Harvard University

  • Talk title: Building the North East Storage Exchange
  • Bio Sketch: Under the direction of Prof. Angela Wilson at UNT, his Ph.D. work focused on rigorous electronic structure methods and basis set development to predict high-accuracy thermochemistry.
