Justin Hwang Laboratory

Meet the Hwang Lab!

Based out of the University of Minnesota, the Hwang laboratory specializes in the discovery of genomic and biological features that characterize therapy resistant endocrine cancers, including prostate, ovarian, and breast.

The Hwang laboratory is currently transforming the way that researchers and physicians approach the treatment of cancer through the development of informatics algorithms that interrogate -omics data from laboratory models and patient samples

Through these algorithms, genome-scale gene editing and informatics tools have been deployed to identify novel target genes, biomarkers, or in the development of patient databases to facilitate clinical studies on UMN patients.

But we’re more than just that. We’re future physicians, medical students, undergraduates, mentors, and innovators. We’re a family of passionate individuals caring for the families in our community impacted by cancer

Together, we will uncover novel discoveries that change the way we treat our patients and loved ones.

Justin Hwang received his undergraduate degree from Carnegie Mellon University in chemical engineering and went on to pursue a graduate degree in biochemistry from Tufts University. He completed his final training in 2020 at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. During this time, he developed genome-scale functional and analytical approaches to identify gene targets in lethal cancers, including metastatic prostate cancers and breast cancer. He is currently an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Transplantations.

At the UMN, he leads collaborations and consortium studies with cancer centers such as Dana Farber Cancer Institute, John Hopkins University, National Cancer Institute, the Masonic Cancer Center (MCC), and industry partners such as Caris Precision Oncology Alliance, Decipher (veracyte), Tempus, and Foundation Medicine.

Pursuing in a career in medicine or research?

"Established in 2021, the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Transplantation (HOT Division) at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities offers a competitive, six week Summer Internship Research Program. The program runs June 6, 2022 to July 15, 2022 and is open to undergraduate students. The program goal is to encourage the next generation of scientists to become leaders and innovators in the field of hematological and oncological malignancies. The program aims to support the interests of each scholar in developing a long-term career in research or clinical disciplines."
