Introduction

Hello, we are Cassie and Leah, Dr. V's lab assistants for Spring 2022 for HLTH 3300 Public Health Communication and HLTH 3305 Community Health Methods. This semester we have provided feedback on student projects such as social marketing posters, individual brand boards, and group virtual panel presentations. We also developed learning aids and other materials to be used in the instruction of these courses in the future.

HLTH 3300 & 3305 Module headers

We both developed module headers for both HLTH 3300 and 3305 based on a header template from Dr. V. We choose pictures we felt represented the module's contents. These headers have been added to this semester's modules for both HLTH 3300 and HLTH 3305.

Educational Materials

Part of being a lab assistant included creating educational materials for both HLTH 3300 and HLTH 3305 that could be used by students to reference specific topics. Each of the educational materials created went through a pilot test and received feedback from Dr. V and the other lab assistant.

How to Plan, Implement, and Evaluate a Panel Presentation

In HLTH 3305, students' semester-long projects could contain a panel presentation. During my time as the UMD Event Coordinator, I had some insight into the planning, implementing, and evaluating process for a panel presentation. I gave this presentation live to the HLTH 3305 class and recorded it via zoom. - Cassie

Below, you can view each of the slides from the presentation. I discussed topics such as program objectives, learning objectives, preparing the audience for learning, email templates, designing materials, zoom setting, evaluation formats, and more.

Adobe and Other Applications

In HLTH 3300, students learn to use Adobe software. I created a quick guide for students to refer to and review the different applications that we use in class. This guide features each application's major functions so that students can decide which to use for each project. - Leah

Adobe Applications and Functions

This document breaks down the Adobe applications beyond their basic function. It explains the different image types, workspace and area, the original file types, export options, and save as options. This helps students to recall the items that are unique to each application, as well as the different file types available from them. - Leah

File Types

(Created by Leah Fleischhacker '22)

I created this document to thoroughly explain each file type. It shows each file type used in class with a written description of its basic function. I also included icons to explain whether or not the file is scalable, supports transparency, and whether it is used for web or print use. This allows students to know which file type would be best to use based on what they are creating. - Leah

File Types Video

This video goes along with the document I created above. It further explains each file type and gives examples of where they are seen when used. This allows students to see the practical applications of what they are learning. - Leah

Meet the Lab Assistants

Cassie Mohawk '22

My name is Cassaundra Mohawk, and I am a 4th-year UMD Public Health student. I am minoring in both Early Childhood Studies and Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies. Throughout my time at UMD, I have been a Research Assistant for Dr. Jessica Hanson for over a year. I have also been honored to be a co-author of a published article, “Unintentional consequences of alcohol-exposed prevention programs in tribal communities.” I was a UMD Public Health Event Coordinator during both the Spring 2021 and Fall 2021 semesters supervised by Dr. V. During my time as an Event Coordinator, I planned, implemented, and evaluated two UMD Public Health Showcases and three zoom panel presentations that can be found on the UMD Public Health Facebook page. I continued working with Dr. V as a Lab Assistant for HLTH 3300 and 3305 this semester. This is also my last semester as the secretary of the Public Health Student Group. In my free time, I enjoy spending my days at coffee shops in town and hiking in Duluth and up the North Shore with friends and family! After I graduate in a few weeks, I am continuing my education at the University of Minnesota to receive a Master of Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in Maternal and Child Health.

Leah Fleischhacker '22

Hi there! My name is Leah Fleischhacker, and I am a senior at UMD majoring in Public Health and minoring in Health Coaching. A few of my health interests include health communication, environmental health, and health equity. This Summer I will be interning with SNAP-Ed through UM Extension working with campus food shelves. Outside of my work, I enjoy beachcombing the shores of Lake Superior and hiking the beautiful trails! After graduation, I hope to find work as a health communications specialist. Thank you for taking the time to review our work!
