Anna Krahn: Aiming for the Stars
Growing up in far northern Minnesota, I always wanted to go to college, but there aren’t post-secondary options near me, so I’m applying to a program more than five hours away from home. I want to live independently, have a roommate, and have lots of friends.
In my free time, I keep journals and write and draw about space. It’s something I started doing after I saw a movie about a special education class that went to space camp at NASA, a true story. Stars and planets are like a dream world to me, and my favorite planet is Saturn.
If you’re thinking about applying for college, I would say, ”You’ve got this.” You’re not a kid anymore, so go for it!

College and Career Learning Inside and Outside the Classroom
April 16
6–7:15 pm Central Time
College is an enormous growth opportunity in the lives of all students. In this webinar, Dr. Kathryn Burke (pictured) from Temple University’s Institute on Disabilities explains how inclusive higher education initiatives for students with intellectual disability can promote this growth by supporting students to set and work toward meaningful college and career goals and gain related experiences. Burke and a current Temple University student will describe, provide resources, and share student experiences from Temple’s Leadership and Career Studies’ four-year certificate program. Temple enables students and those who support them to plan and strengthen college and career abilities, gain related experiences in the campus community, and track progress—all without separate, specialized courses.

Inclusive Program of Study
April 9
3–4:15 pm Central Time
When college students complete a degree, nondegree, or certificate program, they expect to earn a meaningful credential—a credential that will open doors to greater independence and the career path of their choice. College students with intellectual disability have the same expectation. This gathering will have a panel of colleagues from across the country who are leading their institution’s inclusive higher education programs. They will provide insight into how they planned and offered an inclusive program of study approved by their institution.
The panelists are Jaclyn Camden (pictured at left), who is director of the ACE-IT in College at Virginia Commonwealth University; Amy D’Agati Dwyer (center), who is director of the TerpsEXCEED program at the University of Maryland; and Thomas Neuville (right), who is a professor of
Integrated Studies and the principal investigator of the Pennsylvania Inclusive Higher Education Consortium TSPID Grant at Millersville University.

These grants will allow Minnesota institutions to develop new or enhance existing higher education initiatives to reduce barriers and increase enrollment levels and opportunities for students with an intellectual disability.
The request for proposals for these competitive grants is expected to open in May 2024. Staff from MIHEC’s TA Center and the Minnesota Office of Higher Education will answer frequently-asked questions during MIHEC’s Community of Practice gathering in May. |

Funding for the development of the Inclusive Higher Education Technical Assistance (TA) Center was secured in the Higher Education Omnibus Bill during the 2023 Legislative session. The Minnesota Office of Higher Education will provide the funding through a contract with the Institute on Community Integration at the University of Minnesota to establish the TA Center, with the purpose of creating access to self-sustaining postsecondary education options across the state for students with an intellectual disability to earn postsecondary credentials. |
The University of Minnesota stands on Miní Sóta Makhóčhe, the rightful homelands of the
Dakhóta Oyáte. ICI recognizes that the U.S. did not uphold its end of these land treaties. It is the current and continued displacement of the Dakhóta Oyáte that allows the University to remain today. At ICI, we affirm our commitment to address systemic racism, ableism and all other inequalities and forms of oppression to ensure inclusive communities. |
