North Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program

North Memorial

We prepare residents for future practice by combining clinical training in an urban community that is underserved with limited access to health care and that offers a high-intensity, full-spectrum hospital experience.

Many of our residents have an interest in underserved medicine and health disparities, whether in an urban or rural setting. We believe broad, vigorous training enables our residents to practice anywhere, and 30 percent of our graduates go on to a rural practice. Community health and integration are also fundamental to the North Memorial residency experience.

Our program has ACGME Osteopathic Recognition.

FAQs

WHAT IS THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF PATIENTS CARRIED BY FIRST-YEAR RESIDENTS?

First-year residents start with four patients on the family medicine service, going up to eight by the end of the first year.

WHERE DO GRADUATES PRACTICE?

Our graduates practice all over the country, but a majority stay in Minnesota. Approximately 50% of graduates are in an urban or suburban Minnesota practice. About 30% go into rural practice, and another 10% pursue fellowships such as sports medicine or addiction medicine.

ARE THERE OPPORTUNITIES FOR INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL?

Yes, residents may travel in the second and/or third year.

Shailey Prasad, MBBS, MPH, residency faculty, is also executive director of the University of Minnesota Center for Global Health and Social Responsibility and is a great resource to our residents interested in global health.

To participate, residents must:

  • Get written approval by their advisor and program director for time away
  • Submit goals and objectives for the experience
  • Allow 12 months for pre-departure preparation. See Global Family Medicine for more details.

IS THERE A PARENTAL/NEWBORN ELECTIVE?

Yes, this two to six week elective is available to residents.

HOW MANY GRADUATES CARE FOR OB PATIENTS IN PRACTICE?

About 50% in rural and urban hospitals.

WHAT IS THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF DELIVERIES AND OTHER PROCEDURES?

Residents report care for 40 to 100 child-births during their three years of residency.

Procedure totals are driven by resident interest, and our program works hard to provide residents with opportunities which support their goals. The range of numbers below reflects personalized, longitudinal procedure curriculum.

Other procedures (numbers are approximate):

  • Colposcopy: 6-20
  • C-sections: assist, 20-40; as surgeon, 0-10
  • OB ultrasound: 10-40
  • 3rd/4th degree perineal repair: 0-10
  • Colonscopy: 0-40
  • Manual vacuum aspiration: 0-100+
  • Other common procedures include joint injection/arthrocentesis, nexplanon placement/removal, circumcisions, and IUD placement

ARE RESIDENTS INVOLVED IN RESEARCH?

Participation in research is encouraged, but not required. Residents participate in research according to interest and are supported by interprofessional faculty through monthly Percolator meetings.
