Introduction

The Public Health Student Group (PHSG) is for UMD students who are interested in learning more about and developing leadership skills in public health. Our goal is to communicate, promote, and advocate for health, health education/promotion, and the public health profession. As a group, we will provide students with different programming, advocacy, and networking opportunities both on campus and in community settings.

summary of events

During a typical academic year, our organization has in-person meetings scheduled on a bi-weekly basis depending on the leadership team’s schedules and based on members’ preferences. During our biweekly meetings, we discuss potential volunteer opportunities, events that members would like to see from us, offer peer academic advising, and more.

Trivia Night

In March, our group decided to host a catered trivia event. We provided those who attended with free Qdoba and a chance to win three different prizes by winning Kahoot games. One game was public health-related, one was about our professors to help students get to know them, and one was random fun facts. The prizes consisted of an air fryer, a yoga mat and a Hydro Flask, and a bundle of useful items like a hat, journal, pens, and a fun book. Students who placed first would be able to pick their prize of choice! It was a great time and we were so happy with the turnout!

Keep It Moving Challenge

Every year the American Public Health Association promotes National Public Health Week, which this year happens from April 4-10, 2022. The American Public Health Association implements a Keep it Moving Challenge which starts at the beginning of the year (January 1) to the last day of National Public Health Week. However, this year CEHSP decided to have our own Keep It Moving Challenge for all student organizations apart of the school! It was from March 28th to April 8th. We competed against all other participating student orgs in tracking our steps every day. At the end of the two weeks, the number of steps was averaged, and the winners were announced!

Service Sunday

Service Sunday happens every year during UMD's Spring Fest. The idea is to perform a random act of kindness and help make our community a better place. This year, the PHSG joined Kirby Program Board in picking up trash in Leif Erickson Park on Sunday, March 27th. It was successful and as a group, we are glad we were able to be a part of this day!
