Research & Creative Scholarship Showcase 2020!
Registration is now open for this College of Design event which will be held on February 7, 2020 from 9 to 11 a.m in Rapson Hall Courtyard. Please follow the link to learn more about it, to provide input to help inform planning decisions for the 2020 event, and to register to present your work at the Showcase.
 

Ongoing OACA/ CDes Initiatives
Discuss Funding over Lunch on Wednesday, December 4th
Join Dean Carol Strohecker and Lucy Dunne, on Wednesday, December 4th in McNeal Hall, Room 22 to hear a discussion on funding: how to find it, how to to get it, how to find and engage collaborators. Lunch sandwiches will be available to attendees.

2020 MN State Fair - The Research Opportunity Announcement for conducting studies at the Driven to Discover Research Facility the 2020 State Fair is open! Dr. Griffin and her team had a very successful time at the 2019 fair. Let's maintain a College of Design presence at the Minnesota State Fair by taking advantage of this splendid opportunity every year!

The University of Minnesota has created a map of the state with details on projects and research being conducted by its units throughout Minnesota. The ultimate goal is to have a comprehensive visual representation of the positive impact the University has on the state. This mapping project is being called 'the M Pact'.

Call for proposals for Collaborative Student Projects 
The College has three $1,500 grants available to support projects among graduate and/or undergraduate students, collaborating across at least two different disciplines to produce two- or three-dimensional imagery. Projects should explore ways of visually representing complex ideas in a way that broad audiences can understand them.

RADPN Resource Materials 
Thought provoking, Advice-filled, How To and How NOT To pursue research funding, this event was posted on the Research Resources website, and took place on the UMN Campus. Five presenters shared the slides from their presentations at the Research Advancement and Development Professionals Fall Conference they nicknamed "RADCON".

OACA/ CDes Initiatives

  • CDes OACA Seed-funding grants were awarded for the following research initiatives:
    Sparking Crucial Conversations about Mental Health Through Wearable Items - Tasoulla Hadjiyanni, Professor of Interior Design and Calee Cecconi, Design Director for Advancement
    Addressing Health Disparities and Quality Health-CareAccess through Advanced Technology Integration into an Innovative Diagnostic Mobile Application - Linsey Griffin, Assistant Professor of Apparel Design;   Dr. Peterson, MD, Director of the Center for Excellence in Primary Care; and Bethany Juhnke, PhD Candidate at the Earl E. Bakken Medical Device Center
  • Boris Oicherman, the Weisman's Curator for Creative Collaboration hosted a Design & Health Brainstorming luncheon on November 11 at the Weisman. The session developed ideas for youth-participatory sessions to inform the design of the Institute for Child and Adolescent Brain Health, UMN.
  • Reiko Yajima, PhD, CDes Advisory board, (bio) presented a talk on collaborations between Design and Health initiatives, and the pursuit of funding to support research. Dr. Yajima shared her presentation slides.

Growing Convergence Research Program Solicitation
Deadline February 3, 2020
Growing Convergence Research (GCR) at the National Science Foundation was identified as one of 10 Big Ideas. Convergence research is a means for solving vexing research problems, in particular, complex problems focusing on societal needs. It entails integrating knowledge, methods, and expertise from different disciplines and forming novel frameworks to catalyze scientific discovery and innovation. The College of Design sponsored a grant-writing workshop tailored to this NSF Program Solicitation on September 6th. See Research Resources website to access materials from the workshop.

Imagine Fund remaining deadlines
Imagine Fund grants support innovative research or scholarship in the arts, humanities, and design. Applications are now open for the Arts, Humanities, and Design Chair position (due Jan. 6). The Special Events Round 2 applications (due March 16) are not yet live. 
Apply for  ADH chair position. 
 

Grants-in-Aid of Research, Artistry and Scholarship 
Deadline February 6, 2020
Administered through the Office of the Vice President for Research, Grant-in-Aid Program (GIA). 

Faculty Travel Grants 
Deadlines: August, December, March
International Travel Grants are funded by the University of Minnesota central administration to support the internationalization of the University on all campuses through research, teaching, and outreach.  Graduate Students may also apply.

IAS-Faculty Residential Fellows
Each year up to twelve University of Minnesota faculty members are selected as Residential Fellows.

Center for Educational Innovation - Teaching Innovation Grant
Grants for up to $1,000 available to support innovative teaching and learning across the University.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) 
The next deadline for applications is February 24, 2020 for Summer or Fall 2020 projects and July 6 for Fall 2020 projects. 
Be a mentor!  UROP awards fund students to do research and creative activities with faculty. Faculty, please complete this CDes UROP Projects Collection Form  so we can promote your opportunities to students. You can complete this form any time, and as many times as you have ideas to explore undergraduate research help with. 

Meeting your volunteer needs: University Retirees Volunteer Center
When assessing your department’s needs for short-term or ongoing volunteer tasks—from participating in research studies to providing assistance during campus events—consider taking advantage of the skills and experience available from the University Retirees Volunteer Center’s more than 450-person volunteer registry. For more information, email URVC@umn.edu.
