Disability insurance is designed to replace your income if you are unable to work for a while. Whether you need disability insurance depends on your circumstances. If you think you may need the income from disability insurance to meet your financial obligations if you become disabled, consider these:

For Faculty, Professional and Administrative (P&A)

 Academic Disability Program

  • The Academic Disability Program provides paid medical leave and short-term and long-term disability benefits for faculty and P&A staff.
  • The University pays for this benefit. You are automatically enrolled if you meet the eligibility requirements.

Short-term Disability Insurance

  • Short-term Disability Insurance provides income replacement benefits when an injury, sickness, or pregnancy results in your continuous disability for up to 180 days.
  • You pay the full cost if you enroll in this insurance.

Please note that faculty and P&A staff are not eligible to enroll in the voluntary Long-term Disability coverage due to their participation in the Academic Disability Program. However, they are eligible to enroll in the voluntary Short-term Disability coverage.

For Civil Service and Labor-Represented Staff

Short-term Disability Insurance

  • Short-term Disability Insurance provides income replacement benefits when an injury, sickness, or pregnancy results in your continuous disability for up to 180 days.
