Functional Phonics+Morphology is built upon the ideas represented through the Simple View of Reading by creating explicit instruction focusing on building students’ word recognition. Word recognitionthe accurate and  automatic retrieval of decoding wordsis essential for the development of skilled readers.

Functional Phonics+Morphology is built to include multiple strands of The Reading Rope. The heart of the program is Decoding/Spelling or Word Recognition with a focus on Phonemic Awareness, Decoding, and Sight Recognition. There are also other elements of vocabulary and verbal reasoning built into lesson components.
