Rome Day 3: Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies of the National Research Council, and The Vatican

We started the day taking a bus to the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies of the National Research Council, and met our guide Vitto Trianni there. We began by learning a little bit about the NRC. It was established in 1923 and their mission is to carry out the research of all 101 of their institutes.

Our final day of the trip consisted of us getting up way too early and riding over to Rome's da Vinci airport.

The Colosseum and the Last Group Dinner

Today was our last day in Rome. Since our tour didn’t start until 1:30 p.m., we all got a chance to sleep in and do our own thing until then. During our tour, we visited the Colosseum.

Day 15: The big day—the IEEE conference!

With today being the big day of the IEEE conference, and the main reason this trip was made, everyone was mentally preparing for this big event for the last few days.

Day 17: Last Stop—Rome

​​Today we departed from lovely Firenze (Florence) to travel to our last destination: Rome. We took multiple forms of transportation to arrive at our hotel and then grabbed a quick lunch around the area.

Day 18: Sapienza Universita do Roma—Soccer Robots and Human Interaction

Our first full day in Rome started off with a technical visit to Sapienza Universita do Roma (University of Rome), and their RoCoCo Lab and Department of Computer, Control, and Management Engineering. The university was located really close to the hotel we were staying at, so it was only a short walk away.

Day 16: Leonardo, Piazzale Michelangelo, and a Farewell to Florence

We started off the day like most, bright and early, as we made our way to Museo Leonardo da Vinci. The museum featured models of Leonardo’s novel inventions, design sketches, and art reproductions. Models included a clock, tank, scuba gear, and numerous flying machines. It was interesting to bridge the gap between the designs we read about in “Leonardo da Vinci” by Walter Isaacson and the interactive models from the museum.

Day 14: Discovering Florence

Following a delicious breakfast and checkout at Hotel La Pace in Pisa, the group made our way to Florence. Via coach bus, Florence was a short 1.5 hour trip to make it to our hotel of Palazzo Ricasoli. Following the bus ride, we were given time to check out the town center for food and shopping. Around noon, we split off into smaller group for free lunch. A group of us grabbed paninis at Panini Toscani for a quick and amazing lunch.

Day 13: Is the tower leaning or is the city of Pisa just crooked?

Ciao, bellas! We started off today with a historical walking tour of the sights of Pisa. The first stop was climbing the leaning tower.

Day 12: BioRobotics Institute and Scooters

Today was the first full day without Adam, and we were somehow able to handle it emotionally. Anyway, we left the scenic Cinque Terre for Pisa. After settling into our hotel and brief exploration, we attended the BioRobotics Institute at Scuola Supierore Sant’Anna.

Day 11: Hiking at Cinque di Terre

Today was another free day which was dedicated to hiking between and exploring the five villages of Cinque di Terre. We split into two groups, one which would attempt to hike all four segments of the trail, and another which would only hike one.

Day 10: Cinque Terre

Today was a free day and another traveling day. After a quick breakfast we left Genoa. We took two trains with a stop in Santa Margherita Ligure and arrived in Monterosa.

Day 9: Tours of the University of Genova and lots of robots!

Today we traveled to the University of Genova and visited the Department of Informatics, Bioengineering, Robotics & Systems Engineering (DIBRIS). Our host, Professor Lorenzo Rosasco, set us up with a morning filled with presentations about Computational Vision, Motion Analysis, Deep Convoluted Neural Networks, and lots of Linear Algebra. Each presentation was packed with beautiful visuals and groundbreaking research.

Day 8: Genoa, a Trip to IIT, and a Swim in the Mediterranean

Ciao a tutti (hello everyone)! Today was our first full day in Genoa, a stunning city on the coast of the Mediterranean with breathtaking views of the city and sea. We started off bright and early at 8:45 a.m., leaving for a technical visit to the Instituto Italiano Di Technologia (the Italian Institute of Technology), a research facility aimed at promoting Italy’s technological development and higher education.

Day 6: Free day!

Today was our first free day of the trip, meaning the first thing we did was sleep in! It’s been a pretty exhausting trip so far. Once everyone was awake, we split up into different groups going to do different activities. One of the groups went to a museum and looked at unique looking animals. Another group took a one hour trip to Lake Como, which led to a spectacular view.

Day 5: Visits to a university, robotics lab, and Juliet's balcony in Verona

Today we went on a university site visit to the University of Verona in Verona, Italy. We toured the Altair Robotics Lab in the morning where we saw numerous applications of machine learning technology, with medical and industrial focuses. Students had the opportunity to operate a Da Vinci surgical robot, which surgeons use to make procedures less invasive and dangerous.

Day 4: Famous paintings and a visit to an engineering technical college in Turin

The group started the day off pretty early, leaving at 7:45 am for a visit to Santa Maria delle Grazie to see The Last Supper, along with a painting of The Crucifixion by Giovanni Donato da Montorfano. We had to wait a while outside the church before getting in, and it served as a great opportunity to get a group picture.

Day 2: Historical Introduction to Italy

The first day in Milan served to give the group a more geographical and historical connection to Leonardo da Vinci and Italy as a whole.
