This 'introductory-level' course is designed for occupational therapists who want to:

• Return to practice
• Change their area of practice,
• Further develop their practice skills,
• Earn contact hours/NBCOT Professional Development Units (PDU)
• Reinstate their Minnesota License when lapsed for 4 years or more

TARGET AUDIENCE

Occupational Therapists(OT) or occupational therapy assistants (OTA)  who have completed an entry level OT or OTA education, at any time and need to complete continuing education in order to become licensed in their state,  OR currently licensed OTs or OTAs who wish to change area of practice.  

Educational Level: Introductory

Prerequisites: Graduate of an entry level OT program or entry level OTA program

Session including both the online portion as well as the four-day in person portion:

NBCOT Professional Development Units (PDU) - 75 PDUs
AOTA Continuing Education Units -  64 Contact hours - 6.4 CEUs (this includes 40 hours of online instruction plus 24 hours face to face)
COST: Course fee is $1,499.00.

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER:

Registration has been extended from 4/30/24 to 5/13/24. All online learning would need to be completed by 7/30/24 to receive your certificate of completion. The kick-off date has been updated to 5/13/24 (it will no longer be held on 5/1/24). 

The in-person portion of this course requires a minimum of 5 participants. The in-person labs will be canceled if registration minimums are not met by 5/13/24. A refund will be offered to all who have pre-paid as requested.

If there are fewer than 5 participants, in lieu of the full course, the online portion of this course can be purchased for $749, which includes 40 contact hours, and is supported by University faculty. The online learning option would remain open through 7/30/24. No extensions can be granted. Incomplete course work would result in loss of certificate and registration fee.

The online option will only be available if registration minimums are not met. We will only offer one version of this course. 

Kickoff meeting (via Zoom) and course opens: May 1, 2024. Participants begin the course in an online, asynchronous and self-paced supported environment to learn about current evidence and intervention approaches and later join their peers in an on campus session to practice hands-on skills. Learners should plan to complete the online portion of learning by July 15.

If the face to face session is held, we will hold it on the University of Minnesota campus: July 18-21, 2024. At this 4 day onsite experience, learners will engage in hands-on activities as well highly interactive small group activities around the following topics:  

The OT Practice Framework; The Occupational Profile; OT Outcome Measures; Documentation and Goal writing;  Wheelchair and mobility lab; Splinting lab; OT Practice with Older Adults across settings; Practice in Mental Health across settings; Practice with Children and Youth across settings;   Driving; Health Care Systems; Policy; Returning to practice.

Objectives

• Gain confidence in knowing the basics of occupational therapy.
• Gain confidence in performing skills needed for occupational therapy interventions.
• Develop a network of resources to further their practice in occupational therapy (faculty, colleagues, texts, internet).
• Gain confidence in re-entering the workforce or changing an area of practice.

AOTA Classification Codes: Category 1: Occupational Therapy Service Delivery: Evaluation, Intervention, Outcomes. Category 2: Professional Issues: Legal, Legislative, Regulatory and Reimbursement Issues; Supervision, Contemporary Trends and Issues, Supervision.
